The United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades are seeking tax assistance volunteers

United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades are looking for volunteers for the Income Tax Assistance Program.  VITA volunteers help working individuals and families keep their hard-earned money.  Last year, volunteers prepared nearly 7,000 tax returns for individuals and families worth up to $66,000.  Refunds for those using this free service totaled nearly $11 million.

If you are looking for an opportunity to return the favor, United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades Looking for volunteers to help out during the upcoming tax season.

“This is a volunteer-driven program and we need volunteers,” said Mary Meador, director of the Volunteer Engagement and Voluntary Income Tax Program with the United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades. Volunteers are trained and certified through the IRS program to file simple tax returns for families earning less than $66,000 annually.

There are no special requirements for volunteering, said Midor.

“You don’t have to have any experience whatsoever to do this program,” Medor said. “There is no age requirement. We have two high school students, retired, stay at home moms, anyone who wants to help can help. We have in-person and online coaching classes because everyone’s schedule is different. Last year we had 170 volunteers. To really grow the program We need 200 volunteers so we can help more people.”
