Susie and Lianne agreed that the biggest predictor of low iron levels is fatigue:

1. Waking up feeling like you haven’t slept or collapsed at 8 or 9 p.m. every night.

2. Shortness of breath, especially when going up stairs.

3. Always get sick.

4. Always get hurt.

5. Strange lust.

6. Feeling of flow.

7. A change in the flow of your period – whether it’s heavier or lighter.

“If you wake up in the morning and feel like you haven’t slept, or you collapse around 8 or 9 p.m. every night, those are all signs that your iron levels are low,” Suzy said.

“Recommendations for women and iron are very high.

While men only need about 8 milligrams a day, women between 20 and 50 need 18 milligrams — or more than double.

“When you reach menopause, it drops back down to about 8 mg.”

They said the reason we have such high iron requirements in our twenties, thirties, forties and early fifties is due to our menstrual cycle:

“Think about it,” Lynn said. ‘We’re bleeding.’ You need to stay on top of it, and if you feel tired, you have to do something about it.

The second indicator of low iron levels is shortness of breath, especially when climbing stairs or feeling faint.

This is again due to low energy levels – and it may be worth seeing a dietitian or GP for a blood test.

“A dietary supplement may be recommended to you, but with supplementation it can take months to have an effect,” Lian said.

If you are very tired and short of breath, it may be best to get an iron infusion.

Other indications of low iron include that you are constantly getting sick, falling or getting injured, and have unusual cravings.

‘Pay attention to your body.’ Lian said if he’s telling you you want to eat rocks or something weird, your body is trying to tell you something.

Finally, if there is a change in your menstrual flow – whether it stops or becomes heavier – it could be a sign of low iron levels.

“Find a doctor who will actively help you manage your iron levels since you can’t go on feeling tired,” Suzy said.

There are some quick and easy ways you can increase your iron levels through your diet.

Nutritionists recommend incorporating plenty of whole grains such as whitbits, fortified cereals and legumes such as lentils.

“I’m trying to say that you should have a good source of iron at every meal and every snack if you don’t eat meat,” Suzy said.

Other good food sources include nuts, tempeh, tofu, dried apricots, chickpeas, and baked beans — but you shouldn’t take iron with tea or coffee.

“Pairing iron with a source of vitamin C will increase absorption levels, but if you drink tea or coffee with an iron source, tannin levels can block any absorption,” they said.
