The Lightship VPS for Web brings Niantic’s Visual Positioning System (VPS) to the 8th Wall platform. This first-of-its-kind browser-based technology connects the real world to the digital one by pinning WebAR content to sites and enabling virtual objects to interact with the space in which they are located. This makes the augmented reality experience feel more personal, more purposeful and more realistic, and gives users new reasons to explore the world around them.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 22, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Niantic today announced the launch of Lightship VPS for the web, making the web a more powerful place for augmented reality by bringing Visual Positioning System (VPS) to the Eighth Wall platform.

Lightship VPS for web turns everyday sites into demo destinations. Technology gives new meaning to locations by unlocking a digital twin that can be scaled up to create an infinite amount of extraordinary experiences. This directs traffic to a specific location, such as a statue in a park or a storefront in a city, to delight and engage users in entirely new ways that lead to real-world value. Using the 8th Wall platform, developers, agencies and brands can create WebAR experiences that can only be handled in one place, reinforcing the need to be in a specific location, or AR experiences that can be used at any number of VPS activated locations on the Niantic AR Map, Which increases access to this content. They can also create multi-location experiences such as AR location finder games and AR geo games by combining a number of VPS-activated experiences into a single project.

“At Niantic, we believe the real world should get people to explore and connect with the world around them,” says John Hanke, CEO of Niantic. “Bringing Lightship VPS to the web is an important step forward for augmented reality, enabling developers to realistically integrate digital content into the real world with precision and persistence. It is exciting to see early demonstrations from partners around the world and we know this is only the beginning. We can’t wait to see the experiences of Location-based augmented reality that our developer community will be creating with this new service.”

Today’s developers want to build immersive AR experiences rooted in real-world locations. To do this, they must first understand exactly where their users are located and what they are looking for. Lightship VPS uses Niantic’s map of the world to embed AR content at centimeter-level accuracy at locations around the world. By bringing this powerful platform to the 8th Wall platform, developers can now create VPS-enabled AR experiences with unprecedented precision and accuracy that run directly within a mobile browser, and require no app download.

In addition to enabling next-level location-based AR experiences, Lightship VPS for Web also gives WebAR developers, for the first time, access to a 3D network of a location for use in the AR scene. This game-changing ability enables developers to create WebAR experiences that take advantage of blockage and physics and add a higher level of interaction between virtual objects and the physical world. This results in an immersive, realistic augmented reality experience we’ve never seen before in a browser that can be accessed on any iOS or Android smartphone, including non-LiDAR-enabled devices.

“Today marks a major milestone for the web and augmented reality,” says Tom Emmerich, Director of Product Management, The Eighth Wall at Niantic. “Lightship VPS unlocks extraordinary value for developers by providing them with a new tool for creating WebAR experiences that not only learn where its users are in the world but also allows them to access relevant information to better integrate virtual content with where it is being experienced. This is the first Another browser, unlocked by Niantic’s 8th Wall platform, makes WebAR feel more real, more personal, and more connected to the real world than ever before.”

Developers can add VPS-activated sites to Niantic’s augmented reality map, or instantly take advantage of the more than 100,000 VPS-activated sites available at launch, to build their own location-based WebAR experiences. VPS-activated locations are not just streetscapes or public landmarks, but a collection of publicly accessible places that include parks, trails, local businesses, and more. Built together, as a community, Niantic’s Augmented Reality map is powered by surveys of real-world locations from developers, surveyors, and gamers. The community has contributed millions of sites, images, surveys, and essential data that make it possible to serve localization with Lightship VPS. This level of detail ensures that users can confidently localize to an active VPS site, across different times of the day, and seasons of the year. Developers can find, create and develop VPS-activated sites, including authoring and simulating their own augmented reality experience remotely, within the Geospatial Browser on the 8th Wall.

Lightship VPS for web is now available to all 8th Wall developers.
