Big screen, longer battery life

  • iPhone 14 Plus is basically the standard iPhone 14 with a larger screen.
  • It feels like a feather compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, plus it’s $200 less and has better battery life.
  • It doesn’t have the latest features and processors of the Pro models, but it’s worth looking into.

If the iPhone 14 Plus is any indication, people love the larger screens. When Apple announced the iPhone 14 series in 2022, it discontinued the small-screen Mini model in favor of the Plus model.

The “Plus” designation is more of a revival than a novelty, as Apple introduced Plus versions of the iPhone before the iPhone X. If Apple is placing its bets on larger screens, the iPhone 14 Plus is an excellent proposition for someone who prefers larger phone screens but doesn’t want to pay the price. Starting at $1,100 for Apple’s Pro Max models.

But the iPhone 14 Plus feels like something completely new — it’s a big, lightweight iPhone that costs no more than $1,000. Perhaps most impressive is the superior battery life of any phone I’ve tested.

iPhone 14 Plus is incredibly lightweight for a large screen phone

The iPhone 14 Plus is a larger-screen iPhone that’s lighter than the Pro Max and is a dream to use.

iPhone 14 Plus delivers a 6.7-inch large screen experience while being lighter (7.16 ounces) than iPhone 14 Pro Max (8.14 ounces). This is certainly thanks to the iPhone 14 Plus’ lighter aluminum frame compared to the heavy steel used in the iPhone 14 Pro Max, as well as the lack of a 3x zoom camera.

The 15% difference may seem slight, but you will feel the difference in daily use. It is easier to hold and maneuver with one hand, and more comfortable to hold.

The iPhone 14 Plus has amazing battery life, even outperforming the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

For the first time, a standard non-Pro iPhone outperforms the Pro model in battery life. The iPhone 14 Plus finished the battery test with 73% remaining, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max had 67%.

For comparison to an Android phone that also has a large 6.7-inch screen, Google’s Pixel 7 Pro finished the test with a score of 58%. There is no competition between the iPhone 14 Plus and the Pixel 7 Pro here.

If battery life is at the top of your checklist when shopping for a new phone, you should consider the iPhone 14 Plus.

Other than the size and battery life, the iPhone 14 Plus is just the iPhone 14

iPhone 14 Plus is the same size as iPhone 14 Pro Max, but it comes with the same features as the standard iPhone 14.

iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 share the same A15 Bionic processor, 12MP main and ultra-wide cameras, and features including new crash detection and emergency SOS functions.

While the Plus screen is larger, it has the same 60Hz (Hz) refresh rate as the regular iPhone 14 instead of the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 120Hz screen. It’s not detrimental to the overall user experience, but the 60Hz screen isn’t smooth. Understandably, the standard iPhone won’t be on par with the Pro model, but a 60Hz screen has no place in a phone this price.

The iPhone 14 may be a disappointment and lackluster, as it’s essentially the iPhone 13 with a $100 price increase, but the iPhone 14 Plus has impressive battery life and a larger screen.

iPhone 14 Plus vs. iPhone 14 Max: Which Big Screen iPhone Should You Get?

The iPhone 14 Plus is the ideal choice if you like larger phone screens, but thought Apple’s iPhone Pro Max devices were too heavy or too expensive.

iPhone 14 Pro has the latest A16 processor; 48MP triple-camera system with 3x zoom lens; always on, 120Hz display; And the Dynamic Island. It also has a high quality build.

Despite the shortcomings, the iPhone 14 Plus offers a very similar experience to the Pro Max in terms of usage and performance — the A15 Bionic processor in the iPhone 14 Plus opens and runs apps just as fast as the A16 Bionic processor in the iPhone 14 Pro models, at least for now. It is unclear if the iPhone 14 Pro will last longer than the iPhone 14 Plus in terms of performance, but the previous generation processors historically show their age a year earlier than the current generation processors.

What can be seen is when I switch from the iPhone 14 Pro Max to the Plus, I find myself missing the smoothness of the 120Hz display and 3x zoom lens. But I’m hardly aware of the notch instead of the dynamic island, or the screen not always working.

Ultimately, the choice will depend on how much you rate a significantly lighter, more comfortable experience compared to the premium features and faster processor, plus the $200 difference. For me, it was the first — the Pro Max’s specification feature just isn’t enough to beat the Plus’s pleasant user experience.

I’m not going to lie, when I switched from the iPhone 14 Pro Max to the iPhone 14 Plus for this review, I pretty much missed the smooth 120Hz screen and 3x zoom lens. But I hardly noticed that I went back to using the notch instead of the dynamic island, or that I no longer had the always-on display.

The iPhone 14 Plus offers a great iPhone experience for under $1,000, and it’s totally worth buying.

This is a definitive yes if you like larger phone screens, especially if you’ve always thought the Pro Max models were too heavy or expensive. And if you value battery life above all else, the iPhone 14 Plus is the obvious choice.

However, it’s totally understandable if you’d opt for the iPhone 14 Pro Max for a smooth 120Hz screen and an extra 3x zoom lens, despite its higher price or heavier weight. While I will still be using the iPhone 14 Plus for the foreseeable future, these two outstanding features will always be at the core of my mind.
